When iCloud+ wins

Your whole life is in Apple. iPhone backup, Notes, Messages, Photos, and desktop-folder sync on macOS all default to iCloud. Nothing else in the category makes them all Just Work the way iCloud does. Same $9.99/month for 2 TB as Dropbox, so cost isn’t the deciding factor.

When Dropbox wins

You leave the Apple world for anything. Windows machine at work, Android phone, sending files to people on other operating systems, or working in creative tools that assume Dropbox integration by default. Dropbox’s Windows client is dramatically better than iCloud’s, its sync engine is faster for large files, and it plays nicer with the rest of the software world.

Where they tie

Both hit $9.99/month for 2 TB. Both have family sharing. Both do file versioning and secure sharing. Both are legitimately reliable and mature.

The bottom line

Pure Apple household: iCloud+, no reason to complicate. Mixed household or work-outside-Apple: Dropbox, worth every dollar for the sync engine. If your photos live on iCloud but your work files live in Dropbox, that’s a legitimate way to run both and use each for what it’s best at.
