Why does Hetzner require ID verification?
Hetzner is a German company subject to EU anti-fraud regulations. They verify identity to prevent abuse. Most signups are approved within a business day. If the ID check is a blocker, Linode is the closest alternative that does not require it.
Did the Akamai acquisition change Linode?
Yes. Linode was acquired by Akamai in early 2022 and is now marketed as Akamai Cloud Computing. The product is still recognizably Linode but the roadmap has shifted toward integration with Akamai’s CDN, DNS, and enterprise security tooling. Standalone Linode buyers get less product focus than they did pre-acquisition.
