Vultr vs Linode: The DigitalOcean Alternatives That Stayed Real

Vultr vs Linode · the second-tier developer-cloud pair

Vultr vs Linode: the DigitalOcean alternatives that stayed real.

Both Vultr and Linode built loyal followings competing with DigitalOcean on price and region coverage. Linode is now part of Akamai, which changes the roadmap. Vultr is still independent. Here is where each one actually wins.

When Vultr wins

Cheaper starting price, more regions, and independent roadmap. If your workload is region-sensitive or you need a specific country Linode does not serve, Vultr’s footprint is broader. Vultr’s High Frequency Compute tier is a genuine performance tier at a competitive price point for CPU-bound workloads.

When Linode wins

You already use Akamai for CDN, DNS, or security, and want to consolidate billing. Linode’s integration with the Akamai ecosystem (Akamai CDN, Akamai DNS, Akamai security tooling) is the reason to pick it over Vultr since the acquisition. Standalone Linode is a fine developer cloud but no longer meaningfully better than Vultr or DigitalOcean at the compute tier.

Where they tie

Both are mature developer clouds with Linux VMs you install everything on. Both have decent documentation. Both have similar snapshot, backup, and networking add-ons. Both are pay-as-you-go and stable choices for small to mid-size workloads.

The bottom line

Standalone: Vultr on price, region coverage, and independent roadmap. If you already live in the Akamai ecosystem: Linode for the integration. If you are new to cloud entirely and want the smoothest onboarding, look at DigitalOcean first, which has a bigger community and more tutorials than either.

Questions

Common questions

Did the Akamai acquisition change Linode?

Yes. Linode was acquired by Akamai in early 2022 and is now marketed as Akamai Cloud Computing. The product itself is still recognizably Linode but the roadmap has shifted toward integration with Akamai’s CDN, DNS, and enterprise security tooling. Standalone-Linode buyers get less product-focus than they did pre-acquisition.

Is Vultr or Linode faster?

Vultr’s High Frequency Compute tier is faster than Linode’s equivalent shared plans for CPU-bound workloads. On standard shared plans, both benchmark within a few percent of each other. Neither is slow at the entry tier.

Which one is better for WordPress?

Both support WordPress via one-click marketplace images. Neither is a managed WordPress host; you install and maintain the stack yourself. For managed WordPress on either underlying cloud, use Cloudways, which supports both providers.
